Twenty Three
I spent the rest of the morning in bed, close enough to make the bathroom dash to throw up. Curtis brought me orange juice and paracetamol, which came back up not long after it went down. It was horrible and I was miserable. My stomach churned and tightened, and ached with the desperation to feel like a part of my body again. God, I felt awful. It was the worst hangover I’d ever had. Expensive, super old cognac did not agree with me, and I’d changed my mind on agreeing with Curtis when he said Jesse was a genius last night. His surgeon hands wouldn’t make this go away.
There was a quiet tap on the door as I crossed the room to get back into bed.
“Come in,” I croaked.
Jesse opened the door and stepped in.
“It stinks in here.” He screwed his nose up and sat on the edge of the bed. “Have you showered?”
“Yes,” I shrieked and covered my face to hide the blush of humiliation. “It’s the clothes from last night. And I’m sure my pores are leaking alcohol.”
I swallowed hard, trying to keep the nausea down.
“Come on.” Jesse stood. “Time to get up.”
I shook my head as he rounded the bed to my side and threw the duvet back.
“I was going to join you in here, but the fumes will intoxicate me and I need to drive later.”
“Good. I wasn’t inviting you in.” He tugged on my hand and pulled me from the bed. “Jesse, please don’t.”
“I’m bored,” he whined like a child, and I rolled my eyes. “Kerry had to go for coffee with her tutor and Curtis is at the office.”
“Why is he at work?” I asked, pulling a pair of his boxers on under his t-shirt. “Why didn’t he say goodbye?”
“Angelica called about some business with First Fitness. He’ll be back.” He laughed at himself. I didn’t know what was funny. “Want to watch Terminator?”
“Not particularly.” I rolled my eyes again and fought the smile.
I followed him out of the bedroom and down the hall to the living room. He was right – the bedroom did smell. I hadn’t realised how much I’d been trying not to breathe until I stepped outside and took a deep breath.
“Why do you have to drive later? Where are you going?”
Jesse tensed as he sat down and patted the spot next to him. I dropped onto it.
“I have to meet Daniel at Joe’s.”
“He hasn’t shut the place down?”
“Nah.” He shook his head. “I think he likes it.”
“What is there to like?”
“You’ve been in the pit. You know.” I scoffed. There was nothing to like about the pit. It was just convenient. Jesse sighed and laughed. “Still in denial, I see.”
“What?”
“You. Denial. You’re a fighter, Skye, but you reject it. I’m still trying to figure out why.”
My skin prickled and my heart rate picked up. I had no idea why his words evoked such a strong reaction, but I shook my head and moved to stand up. He stopped me.
